Emerald bays, limestone cliffs and islands made for slow days

Destination introduction

Southern Thailand

Southern Thailand is where the country slows down and the sea takes over. On the Andaman coast, hundreds of limestone islands rise from the emerald water of Phang Nga Bay, hiding sea caves and secret lagoons that are best explored by longtail boat or sea kayak. Beyond them lie the Phi Phi Islands, with their dramatic cliffs and clear turquoise water, and the Similan Islands, among the finest snorkelling spots in Asia.

Phuket is the region's gateway. Alongside its long sandy beaches and private pool villas, the island hides a charming Old Town of pastel Sino-Portuguese shophouses, busy morning markets and a Big Buddha looking out over the coast. Across the bay, Krabi feels wilder and quieter: towering cliffs frame Railay Beach, sunsets glow over Ao Nang, and island-hopping trips lead to the Hong Islands and tiny sandbars that appear at low tide.

On the other side of the peninsula, Koh Samui offers a gentler Gulf of Thailand escape, with coconut groves, wellness retreats, quiet coves and the protected islands of Ang Thong Marine Park. Inland, the rainforest of Khao Sok and its floating lake bungalows add a touch of adventure between the two coasts.
